Nessie
In 2005 I heard of the plight of dogs in various puppy farms around Australia, and followed attempts to expose the cruelty that occurs. When a farm in Victoria surrendered some of their breeding dogs into rescue, I decided to adopt one as a companion for Piobaireachd.
Nessie arrived at our home after several months with Cordelia's Canine Rescue. She had improved a lot, but was still very scared of people, and even more scared of people who tried to lure her with food. We started on a training regime which lasted several years, designed to help her overcome her past. She gradually came to tolerate and even like being out of the house, and after a couple of years we had a huge breakthrough when she expanded the circle of people she trusted of her own accord.
She has trained in obedience in the beginner levels, and even passed her club-based assessment as the judges were kind enough to assess her from another ring, where she couldn't see them! She also has completed level 1 training in agility (three times). She absolutely loves the freedom and excitement that comes with being off-lead and learning to enjoy the obstacles. She won't progress, but enjoys repeating the basic training as long as she doesn't have to go through the tunnel or chute!
Nessie died in 2018 after a short illness. She was the first of my dogs to have left me and the shock and sorrow was immense. RIP Nessie noodle.
